In terms of the categories that saw a price increase, Frozen Vegetables are up 14.7% year-over-year, salad dressing is up 12.1%, uncooked beef is up 10.7%, and chewing gum is up 9.4%. We also have car insurance up 19% from a year ago (which, is likely due to the fact that labor and materials are 17% more expensive today if you need a repair), shipping fares are up almost 10%, Pet Food is up 8.7%, and rent of a primary residence is up 7.8%. -HOUSING: National housing prices have increased by 2.5% year over year, however - monthly payments today are 19% more expensive than a year ago. According to CoreLogic’s recent report, “The annual re-acceleration reflects six consecutive monthly gains, which drove prices some 5% higher compared to their bottom in February.” They also go on to say that the 11 states that saw home price declines were all in the West, “but since many of those markets have inventory shortages, that trend may be short-lived, and recent buyer competition will cause prices to heat up again.” In terms of where we might go in the future, it’s suggested that - since inventory is down from a year ago, “that’s an indication that home prices for 2024 will be roughly flat compared to now.” -CAR PRICES: Since 2012, the average new car has increased from $30,570 to more than $48,000. A report from UBS estimates that global car production “will exceed sales by 6% this year, leaving an excess of 5 million vehicles that will require price cuts to get sold off of lots.” This also suggests that prices could be coming down towards the end of 2023 or early 2024 - and, depending on the type of car you’re buying, this could already be happening early - for example, with Tesla. -THE FEDERAL RESERVE MEETING: The FED decided to pause their rate hike for the month of September until they can get a more definitive direction on how badly inflation persists. This means, their stance will largely be unchanged for the next month until November 1st, at which point - there’s a modest chance we’ll see one more 25 basis point hike. As of now, it seems unlikely that they’ll be lowering interest rates anytime soon - at least until inflation is CONSISTENTLY below their 2% target - and, in terms of when that is, the market isn’t pricing in a strong chance of that happening until September 18th of 2024. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell delivers remarks following the Federal Reserve's two-day policy meeting on Wednesday. The Fed held interest rates steady in a decision released Wednesday, while also indicating it still expects one more hike before the end of the year and fewer cuts than previously indicated next year. That final increase, if realized, would do it for this cycle, according to projections the central bank released at the end of its two-day meeting. If the Fed goes ahead with the move, it would make a full dozen hikes since the policy tightening began in March 2022. » Subscribe to CNBC TV: 🤍 » Subscribe to CNBC: 🤍 Turn to CNBC TV for the latest stock market news and analysis. The U.S. is entering a new economic era. It began with an interest rate tightening cycle coming out of the Federal Reserve, with decisions that have reshaped personal finance in America. Some savings accounts can now return meaningful interest for the first time in years. It has also led to a Wall Street reshuffling, and a wave of corporate bankruptcies as some bad bets turn sour. With these free money years coming to a close, we examine how the Fed's decision-making has affected the economy. Bond yields surge higher as investors try to make heads-or-tails of the Fed's interest rate outlook after the release of the July FOMC meeting minutes. Will the Fed's inflation target demand higher-for-longer rates or could growth trends paint a different picture? John Hancock Investment Management Co-Chief Investment Strategist Matthew Miskin joins Yahoo Finance's Rachelle Akuffo to talk about the delay in realizing interest rate hikes' effects on the economy ahead of the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium. During COVID, "we flooded the economy with stimulus, and now the Fed has to slow down the economy, normalize it," Miskin states. "It's almost like sleeping pills: you take these pills, you don't know how long it's going to take for it to be felt in the body, in the economy. It's taking time." Laying out global growth concerns, Miskin outlines the core economic drivers being seen in the U.S. labor market. "The Inflation Reduction Act had a pretty big side effect, it created more CapEx in the U.S. and specifically in the Midwest and Southeast," Miskin says, adding: "The women in the country are really stepping up to the plate in terms of the labor market, and that's filling that massive labor gap that we had. That's likely one of the biggest secret weapons the country has." Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell delivers remarks at the Federal Reserve's annual symposium in Jackson Hole, WY on Friday. Since he took over the chair’s position at the Federal Reserve in 2018, Powell has used his annual addresses at the Jackson Hole, Wyoming, retreat to push policy agendas that have run from one end of the policy playing field to the other. In this year’s iteration, many expect the central bank leader to change his stance so that he hits the ball pretty much down the middle. » Subscribe to CNBC TV: 🤍 » Subscribe to CNBC: 🤍 Turn to CNBC TV for the latest stock market news and analysis. A resilient US consumer and better-than-expected economic growth has been the story of the economy throughout the summer of 2023. It might also be what pushes the Federal Reserve to keep raising interest rates. "We are attentive to signs that the economy may not be cooling as expected," Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said Friday at the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyo. "Additional evidence of persistently above-trend growth could put further progress on inflation at risk and could warrant further tightening of monetary policy," Powell added. While acknowledging inflation has moved down from its peak, Powell once again noted that prices remain "too high" and the central bank has not written off further tightening policy. Data from the CME Group on Friday showed markets pricing in a 55% chance the Fed raises rates at its November policy meeting. The Fed's preferred inflation metric, core PCE, showed prices increased 4.1% in June, well off the Fed's long-run goal of 2% but progress from a peak of 5.4% in February 2022. The tick down in inflation has come as signs of a resilient US economy have been abundant. July's retail sales report revealed control group sales, which contribute directly into GDP, rose 1%. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg had expected just a 0.5% increase for the control group. The July labor report showed wages increased 4.4% compared to the year prior while the unemployment rate remains historically low, though overall job gains showed signs of cooling. "Evidence that the tightness in the labor market is no longer easing could also call for a monetary policy response," Powell said. This run of strong data has had economists on Wall Street, and even the Fed's own staff, call off their 2023 recession forecasts while also spurring conversations around a "soft landing" for the economy in which inflation stabilizes without economic growth taking a significant downturn. Some on Wall Street are forecasting "unspectacular growth" that would see the economy avoiding recession, though not exactly impressing. Other outlooks, however, suggest more robust growth could be ahead for the US economy. As of Thursday, the Atlanta Fed's GDPNow forecast, for instance, projected annualized GDP growth of 5.9% in the third quarter, which would be the most robust period of economic growth since the fourth quarter of 2021. And economists say growth at that pace provides "upside risks" to inflation that could keep prices from falling down to the Fed's 2% target. "By highlighting these [upside] risks, and noting that policymakers would proceed 'carefully,' Powell maintained maximum policy optionality for upcoming meetings," EY chief economist Gregory Daco wrote in a note on Friday. As Powell often reiterates, the Fed plans to remain data dependent and the week ahead will bring more information on two key data points. The July PCE report and the August labor report are both set for release in the coming week and will provide the Fed further information on the growth and inflation fronts. But an imminent turn in the Fed's approach appears unlikely after Powell's remarks. "It is the Fed's job to bring inflation down to our 2% goal, and we will do so," Powell said. "We are prepared to raise rates further if appropriate, and intend to hold policy at a restrictive level until we are confident that inflation is moving sustainably down toward our objective." Markets and investors are waiting and wondering how much the Fed's September interest rate decision will line up with expectations, with many anticipating a rate pause this month. SEI Chief Investment Officer Jim Smigiel and Dreyfus and Mellon Chief Economist Vincent Reinhart joins Yahoo Finance Live anchors Josh Lipton and Akiko Fujita to share their predictions on Fed Chair Jerome Powell's ultimate decision. "The Fed does not like to disappoint when the market is kind of all lined up with an expectation like they are for this week, where there will be a pause — the Fed will deliver on that," Smigiel comments on the market's hawkish sentiment. "However, we do think there is, at the least, one more hike baked in the cake. So that will probably come in November." "The big message the Fed's going to want to convey is they're going to keep policy restrictive for as long as it takes," Reinhart outlines.
