Welcome to the Investors Trading Academy talking glossary of financial terms and events. Our word of the day is “OECD” OECD is the common name for the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) is a unique forum where the governments of 34 democracies with market economies work with each other, as well as with more than 70 non-member economies to promote economic growth, prosperity, and sustainable development. The OECD provides a forum in which governments can work together to share experiences and seek solutions to common problems. We work with governments to understand what drives economic, social and environmental change. The organization measures productivity and global flows of trade and investment. They analyze and compare data to predict future trends. The OECD sets international standards on a wide range of things, from agriculture and tax to the safety of chemicals. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development celebrated its 50th anniversary, but its roots go back to the rubble of Europe after World War II. Determined to avoid the mistakes of their predecessors in the wake of World War I, European leaders realized that the best way to ensure lasting peace was to encourage co-operation and reconstruction, rather than punish the defeated. The OEEC was established in 1947 to run the US-financed Marshall Plan for reconstruction of a continent ravaged by war. By making individual governments recognize the interdependence of their economies, it paved the way for a new era of cooperation that was to change the face of Europe. The OEEC began life in 1948, forging a new spirit of partnership to tackle multiple challenges following the devastation of the Second World War. Laying the foundations for lasting co-operation, shared development, and open trade, the Organisation for European Economic Co-operation brought together 18 countries in Western Europe and was the precursor to the OECD – its goals no less relevant today, 75 years later. By understanding what the Marshall Plan as well as the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development or OECD are, you ultimately understand what happened to Europe and ultimately the world after World War II. Without the Marshall Plan or without the OECD, things would have looked a lot different, at the very least across Europe. The implementation of the Marshall Plan as well as the emergence of the OEEC and later OECD made it clear that visionaries such as George Marshall wanted to create a framework for peace and prosperity. Was the Marshall Plan perfect? No. Was the OEEC perfect? Nope. Is the OECD perfect? Of course not. But at the end of the day, they make it clear that humanity is... well, trying. That definitely counts for something. Please like, comment and subscribe if you've enjoyed this video. On December 14 2020, the OECD marked its 60th anniversary. The coronavirus crisis reminds us once again, that we can build our world back better only if we work closely together. The OECD is an international organisation established in 1960 that works collaboratively with governments, organisations, and civil society to build better policies for better lives. Throughout its history, the OECD has been a catalyst for change in many aspects of public policy. We encourage debate, provide evidence and promote a shared understanding of critical global issues. The last ten years have been a decade of transformation. From improving economic performance and creating jobs, to building strong education systems, fighting inequalities, preventing international tax avoidance and evasion, we provide an important platform for dialogue and knowledge, sharing data and analysis, exchange of experiences, best practices, and advice on public policies and international standard setting. A little bit of history The forerunner of the OECD was the Organisation for European Economic Co-operation (OEEC), which was formed to administer American and Canadian aid under the Marshall Plan for the reconstruction of Europe after World War II. The Convention transforming the OEEC into the OECD was signed at the Chateau de la Muette in Paris, France on 14 December 1960 and entered into force on 30 September 1961. Since then, the OECD's vocation has been to deliver greater well-being worldwide by advising governments on policies that support resilient, inclusive and sustainable growth. Through evidence-based policy analysis and recommendations, standards and global policy networks, including close collaboration with the G7 and the G20, the OECD has helped advance reforms and multilateral solutions to global challenges. These span the public policy horizon, from the polluter pays principle, which the OECD developed in the 1970s, to PISA in education, not to mention tax transparency and artificial intelligence. Throughout its history, the OECD has striven to become more global, more inclusive and more relevant. What will the world economy look like after 2050? The balance of economic power is set to shift during the next half century, as fast-growing emerging markets such as China and Brazil account for a larger share of global output and world GDP, while developed countries such as the United States and Japan see their share easing back. These OECD projections, which pre-date the coronavirus pandemic, are not set in stone, and economic reforms to improve performance could alter future world rankings. Russia's invasion of Ukraine is taking a heavy toll on the global economy. Laurence Boone, OECD Chief Economist, explains the key findings of the OECD Economic Outlook June 2022, that focuses on the impacts of the war. Beyond the humanitarian disaster, the war has far-reaching consequences in today’s connected world. Energy and food prices have soared, leading to a widespread cost-of-living crisis, a risk of famine in the poorest economies, and worsened conditions for the vulnerable sections of society. This war has also exposed how energy security is inextricably linked to climate change mitigation, and how imperative it is for governments to shift gears to accelerate the energy transition to a greener future. The world is already paying a hefty price for Russia’s aggression. Choices made by policymakers and citizens will be crucial to determining how that price will be distributed across governments, firms, and people. Virtually all household choices – ranging from daily routines, such as what to eat and how to get to work, to less frequent decisions, like how to heat our homes and whether to buy a car – affect the climate and the environment. While the potential of individual and household choices to reduce environmental impacts is clear, the increasing urgency of climate change and other environmental crises illustrates the challenge governments face in realising this potential. How sustainable are household choices and how does behaviour vary across different domains? What is preventing us from making more sustainable choices and how can governments help overcome the barriers? On 13 June, the OECD report How Green is Household Behaviour? Sustainable Choices in a Time of Interlocking Crises was launched during our webinar. The report provides an overview of the results from the 2022 OECD Survey on Environmental Policies and Individual Behaviour Change (EPIC). With comparable data on household environmental behaviour across nine countries (Belgium, Canada, France, Israel, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States) and four thematic areas (energy, transport, waste and food), the EPIC Survey provides unique insights into the drivers of household choices and the measures governments can put in place to make them more sustainable. The webinar included a presentation of the key findings by Jo Tyndall, Director, Environment Directorate, OECD; Shardul Agrawala, Head of Division, Environment and Economy Integration Division, Environment Directorate, OECD and Katherine Hassett, Environmental Economist, Environment and Economy Integration Division, Environment Directorate, OECD; including insights Felix Creutzig, Head of Land-use, Infrastructures and Transport Group at the Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change; Coordinating Lead Author of the IPCC's AR6 in Working Group III and Kimberly Cochran, Chief of the Sustainable Materials Branch in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Resource Conservation and Recovery on the role of demand side measures in managing climate and environment challenges.

The OECD Corporate Governance Committee is reviewing the G20/OECD Principles of Corporate Governance. The review was launched in November 2021 and will be completed in 2023. OECD, G20 and FSB members participate in the review, as well as other countries through the Committee’s regional Roundtables (Asia, Latin America and the Middle East and North Africa). The Terms of Reference and Roadmap agreed by the Corporate Governance Committee sets out the main priorities and timeline for the review. The review’s overall goal is to strengthen the Principles, in particular by adapting relevant elements to the post COVID-19 environment, taking into account any structural effects of the crisis on capital markets and corporate governance practices. The revised Principles will aim to strengthen corporate sector resilience through better risk management and to improve companies’ access to finance from capital markets. In October 2021, OECD Ministers and G20 Leaders supported the Committee’s decision to review the Principles. Ministers and Leaders “recognised the importance of good corporate governance frameworks and well-functioning capital markets to support the recovery, and looked forward to the review of the G20/OECD Principles of Corporate Governance”. A public consultation on proposed revisions to the Principles will be held in fall 2022. Read more: 🤍
